Merry Mulch: Drop off Trees for Free!

Merry Mulch: Drop off trees for free

The Rutland County Solid Waste District will accept real Christmas/holiday trees for free drop-off from residents of district towns. Trees must not carry tinsel, ornaments, spray snow and any other non-compostable material.

This program runs from the day after Christmas through the second Saturday in January (Jan. 11). After that date, or for out-of-district residents, trees and brush are $5 for a pickup truck load.

The Regional Transfer Station is located at 14 Gleason Road in Rutland. The regular hours are Monday – Saturday, 7 AM – 3 PM. Call us or visit our website for holiday hours: (802) 775-7209

Turn your trees into food!

You can also drop off your fresh-cut, clean christmas trees at Cracked an Egg Farm- 191 Newton Road, Brandon. They have sheep that eat the needles right off the tree as a healthy snack! Make sure to bring them by during daylight hours, as the farm dog is free at night to keep predators away.
No tinsel, fake snow, ornaments, or stands attached

Prescription Drug Takeback Day

Prescription Drugs
Unused, unwanted or expired medications must be properly disposed of to avoid harm to others.

Unfortunately, the Diamond Run Mall is no longer open to host the biannual drug takeback day. The upcoming prescription drug takeback day is Saturday, October 26. Luckily, you can dispose of medications properly at two different locations in Rutland year-round:

  • Rutland Sheriff's Office- 88 Grove St
    • Hours: 6:00 AM – Midnight from Monday to Saturday and 6 AM – 8:00 PM on Sundays.
  • Rutland Regional Medical Center Pharmacy- 160 Allen St
    • Hours: Monday to Friday from 7 AM – 5 PM.
  • For locations participating in the DEA Drug Takeback day, visit their web page.

These locations will accept pills and liquids for anonymous drop-off. Do not drop off syringes or sharps at these locations. Contain the needles/sharps in a sturdy plastic container such as a laundry detergent bottle. Tape the container shut, and label it “DO NOT RECYCLE.” Only then may it be thrown in the trash. For more information on sharps disposal, visit this website.
